The Apostolic See will grant plenary indulgence to the faithful who take part in the Fourth World Day of Grandparents and Older People on July 28.
From Vatican News
To foster the faith of the faithful, the Apostolic See, at the request of Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, Prefect of the Congregation for Laity, Families and Life, will grant plenary indulgences to Catholics taking part in the upcoming Fourth World Day of Grandparents and Older People.
Established by Pope Francis in 2021
World Day was established by Pope Francis in 2021 and is celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday in July close to the liturgical commemoration of Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus.
This year it will be celebrated on July 28th with the theme, “Do not forsake me when I am old” (see Psalm 71:9).
According to a decree signed by Archpriest Cardinal Angelo de Donatis, the universal indulgence will be granted to grandparents, the elderly and all the faithful who, “moved by a spirit of true penitence and charity,” take part in the various observances held on this day around the world.
The indulgence is subject to the usual conditions of confession, reception of the Eucharist and a prayer invoking the Pope’s will. The indulgence is only valid on the Fourth World Day of Remembrance for Grandparents and the Elderly.
Complete indulgence
A plenary indulgence provides remission of temporal punishment for sins that have already been forgiven and can be applied to oneself or to souls in purgatory.
The Apostolic See has also granted a plenary indulgence to those who spend significant time visiting, in person or by virtual means, elderly brothers and sisters in need or difficulty, such as the sick, the abandoned, or the disabled.
Total indulgence will also be granted to all those, including the elderly and sick, and those who, for serious reasons, are unable to leave their homes, who offer their prayers, pains and sufferings to God and join in spirit in the sacred observances of the World Day, especially during the various celebrations broadcast through the media.
However, receiving an indulgence requires that the believer be willing to turn away from sin and to fulfill the three usual conditions as quickly as possible.
In the decree, the Apostolic See urges priests who have the authority to hear confessions to approach the administration of the sacrament with generosity.
