Foodies have been raving about Spain for a while now, but now it’s official: this European capital is home to some of the best restaurants in the world.
The rankings of the world’s best restaurants were released on Wednesday night, with Spain’s Disfrutar taking the top honors. Run by chefs Oriol Castro, Eduardo Zatruchi and Mateu Casanas, the restaurant was ranked second on last year’s list.
The rankings are compiled by members of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, made up of chefs, food writers and other industry experts. In total, Spain took three of the top five spots on this year’s list, for a total of six.
Disfrutar in Barcelona has been a regular on the list since 2018, climbing from its debut in 19th place. This year’s win means it is no longer eligible to be on the list. Its gourmet menu includes pancino doughnuts with caviar and frozen gazpacho sandwiches. The restaurant serves two parallel 30-course menus.
“I would like to dedicate this award to our country’s gastronomic community and to all those who have worked and continue to work to build this great profession,” Zatruch said.
This year’s runner-up was chef Victor Arguinzonis’ Asador Etxebarri in Achondo, Spain, which specialises in barbecue dishes. Among US restaurants, New York’s Atomix took the top spot. Hong Kong’s Wing made its debut this year, reaching number 20, its highest ranking yet.
