A new study by Forbes Advisor says Singapore is the safest city in the world for tourists.
The study analyzed factors such as crime, quality of healthcare, and risk of natural disasters, and assigned a safety score from 0 to 100. The safest cities had the lowest scores.
According to the survey’s assessment, Singapore received a score of 0.
Of the 60 cities analysed, the Southeast Asian city had the lowest natural disaster risk and the second-lowest health and infrastructure risk.
The study also analysed digital security risk, defined as the ability to freely use the internet without fear of online attacks or privacy violations. Singapore was adjudged to have the second lowest digital security risk on the list.
The survey ranked Tokyo and Toronto as the safest cities for travelers, after Singapore. Tokyo was judged to have the lowest health safety risk, a testament to the quality of the city’s medical services, and the fifth-lowest infrastructure safety risk.
Japan and Australia were the only two countries to have two cities in the top 10 list in this study, with the top 10 cities including:
- Singapore
- Tokyo Japan
- Toronto, Canada
- Sydney, Australia
- Zurich, Switzerland
- Copenhagen Denmark
- Seoul, South Korea
- Osaka, Japan
- Melbourne, Australia
- Amsterdam, Netherlands
Only one city, Caracas, Venezuela, achieved 100 points.
Caracas “poses the highest health security risks, reflecting the poor level and quality of health services and infrastructure,” the study said. Caracas’ crime rates have also led to the US State Department issuing a “Level 4: Do Not Travel” advisory, the lowest travel security rating for the city.
“Please do not travel to Venezuela due to crime, civil unrest, kidnappings, and arbitrary enforcement of local law. Reconsider traveling due to unjust detention, terrorism, and poor medical infrastructure,” the State Department website says.
Karachi, Pakistan, was deemed the second most dangerous city in the study. Forbes Advisor also categorized it as the city with the highest personal safety risk and the fourth highest infrastructure safety risk.
In a travel advisory issued in June 2023, the U.S. State Department stated that “extremist terrorism and ongoing violence have led to indiscriminate attacks targeting civilians, as well as local military and police,” and issued a “Level 3” advisory to the country, warning people to reconsider traveling.
Coming in third on the list of the world’s least safe cities for travelers was Yangon in Myanmar, followed by Lagos in Nigeria, Manila in the Philippines and Dhaka in Bangladesh.
