Scottie Scheffler’s hopes to win the PGA Championship were thrown into turmoil after the Masters champion was arrested outside Valhalla Golf Club on Friday morning.
The American was heading to the course before the start of the second round when he was stopped by police due to a car accident nearby. Mr. Scheffler was handcuffed and arrested and later charged by the Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections. The second round was postponed by an hour and 20 minutes as a result of the fatal accident, and Schaeffler’s tee time was revised to 3:08pm (BST).
Scheffler, 27, has now been released from police and arrived at Valhalla in search of his second major championship of the year, arriving 53 minutes before his scheduled tee time. He shot a 4-under 67 at the end of round one and was tied for 12th place, five strokes behind leader Xander Schauffele, with Rory McIlroy also in contention in the early rounds.
