Police evacuated schools and homes after a suspected unexploded grenade was found.
The “bomb” was discovered in the garden of a house on Bordesley Green Road, Birmingham, on Monday.
An Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was rushed to the scene along with fire brigade and police.
Experts are now examining it for possible relics from World War II.
Pupils at Bordesley Green Girls’ School were sent home early following the horror.
When the parents came to collect their children, a large security cordon greeted them.
Local residents say they are now banned from approaching their homes and cars.
“It’s all blocked off and we can’t move our car because it’s inside the blockade lines,” said Wes Khan, a father of three.
“This is a massive cordon covering a huge area. Houses around Bordesley Green Girls’ School have been evacuated, as have residential buildings.”
“They are [were waiting] The military [did] anything.”
West Midlands Police said: “A cordon has been established around a property in Bordesley Green Road where a suspected grenade was discovered by a member of the public in the early hours of today (1 July).”
“An Army EOD team will be on the scene to assess the remains and as a precautionary measure neighbours have been evacuated and roads have been closed.”
All roads around the area remain closed while the investigation continues.
