Samsung has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to use its Galaxy Watch to detect sleep apnea in wearers, the company announced. The company announced that the sleep apnea feature within the Samsung Health Monitor app has received De Novo clearance from the US FDA. The feature, which allows the detection of sleep apnea using compatible Samsung Galaxy Watch models and smartphones, is subject to prior approval by the South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) announced in October last year. It is the first of its kind to be approved by the FDA.
“The sleep apnea feature detects signs of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) over a two-day monitoring period in users 22 years and older who have not been diagnosed with sleep apnea. Yes. OSA is a common and chronic sleep condition that many people suffer from. To take advantage of this feature, users only need to log two or more hours of sleep in a 10-day period. That’s fine,” the company wrote in the post.

What is sleep apnea syndrome?
Sleep apnea is a medical condition characterized by brief interruptions in proper breathing during sleep. These include “central sleep apnea,” where the brain doesn’t send the proper signals to control breathing during sleep, and “obstructive sleep apnea,” where muscle relaxation blocks airflow to the lungs. It includes various forms such as ‘breathing’.

OSA causes respiratory arrest during sleep, which can often lead to interruptions in oxygen supply, decreased sleep quality, and increased daytime fatigue. Untreated sleep apnea can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmia, and stroke.
According to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), approximately 25 percent of men and 10 percent of women in the United States experience OSA, the company said in a post.
New features in the Samsung Health Monitor app will help more people proactively detect moderate or severe OSA and seek medical attention to reduce the likelihood of health-related complications as a result of detection. Hope it helps.
