In order to maintain its prestigious status as Africa’s first literary city recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), eThekwini City has introduced a reading program where readers can earn points every time they borrow and read a book. our local library.
Winners can win smart gadgets such as iPads, mobile phones, and tablets.
The Read for Rewards program is a card-earning points system that allows residents to earn library card points by borrowing and reading books. Those with the highest scores will be rewarded.

The program is the brainchild of Ntombyenkosi Vezi, a senior librarian based at Ntuzuma Library. Vezi was recently awarded Best Innovator for eThekwini’s Read for Rewards program, which has been implemented across all 95 libraries.
“The purpose of this program is to attract patrons to the library and encourage them to earn points by borrowing books using their library card,” Vege said. The reward program has four categories: pensioners, adults, youth and juniors.
Simply sign up for the program at your local library, and the highest-scoring readers will be interviewed and asked to give a short review of all the books they’ve read listed on their library card.
Library cardholders participating in the competition must ensure that they do not have any outstanding library fines of more than R10.
