San Diego, CA – Architecture, interiors and landscaping firm Carrier Johnson + Culture (CJ+C) has hired international associate Pierluca “Luca” Maffey. AIA has been appointed as the new company-wide head of design and design principal.
Muffy joins CJ+C with a portfolio of high-profile architectural projects in the hospitality, workplace, mixed-use, master planning, and residential sectors in the U.S. and abroad. During his 25-year career, he has held several positions within the industry from his Principal in Design to his Director of Business and Marketing at firms such as Portman His Architects, TVS Design, Cooper His Carey Architects, and Gensler. I have held the following positions.
Mission: Design Leadership, Business Development, and Culture Cultivation
His role includes company-wide design leadership, business development, and culture cultivation. As a champion of design excellence across the office, he guides creative vision and serves as a mentor and coach. On the business side, Luca will help retain and consolidate existing customers, as well as help acquire new customers and help the company enter new domestic and international markets.

For CJ+C, the addition of Massey is a strategic move in the company’s expansion from the West Coast to other parts of the U.S. and internationally. The San Diego-based company has completed hundreds of projects across the United States. Ray Varela and Claudia Escala, who took over as president in 2019, are working to enhance CJ+C’s reputation as a multidisciplinary design firm with broad influence.
