PRAGUE (AP) – JJ Peterka scored twice as Germany defeated Latvia 8-1 at the World Ice Hockey Championship on Wednesday.
Germany, last year’s runners-up, scored five goals in the second period in Ostrava, handing last year’s bronze medalists their first loss.
Germany’s victory was their second in four matches in Group B.
Dominik Kahun, Kai Wissmann, Leonhard Pfoder, Parker Tuomey, Marc Michaelis and Nico Sturm also scored, while Philipp Grubauer made 20 saves.
Markus Komuls brought on Latvia towards the end of the second period.
In Group A held in Prague, the Czech Republic lost to Switzerland 2-1 in a penalty shootout before defeating Denmark 7-4 for their third win. Ondrej Palat led the Czechs in goals and assists.
Denmark recorded their third loss.
Akira Schmidt then stopped 15 shots and Switzerland defeated Great Britain 3-0, giving Switzerland their fourth win. It was the third consecutive loss for newcomers Great Britain. In Group B, Slovakia defeated undefeated newcomer Poland 4-0 to secure their third win.
