The water quality meeting, held at 3:30 am on 30 July, was attended by representatives of Paris 2024, the World Triathlon Federation, its technical and medical representatives, the International Olympic Committee, Météo-France, the City of Paris and the prefectures of the Île-de-France region involved in carrying out the water quality tests. It was decided to postpone the men’s triathlon, which was scheduled to start at 8 am on 30 July.
Taking into account the latest weather information, it has been decided that the men’s triathlon will be scheduled for 10:45am on July 31st. The women’s triathlon is scheduled to take place at 8am on the same day. Both triathlons will be subject to upcoming water quality testing in line with World Triathlon Standards for Swimming. The original alternative date is also scheduled for August 2nd, subject to further review.
Paris 2024 and World Triathlon reiterate that the health of the athletes is their top priority. Tests carried out today in the River Seine have revealed that water quality levels are not sufficient to guarantee the event can go ahead.
Unfortunately, weather phenomena beyond our control, such as the rain that fell in Paris on 26th and 27th July, can change the water quality, forcing us to reschedule the event for health reasons. Water quality levels have improved over the past hours, but at some points on the swimming course measurements are still above the permissible limits.
Athletes scheduled to take part in the men’s triathlon will be provided with full information regarding the postponement of the event, as well as real-time updates on the situation. Ticket and broadcast information for the event on Wednesday 31 July will be shared in the coming hours.
There will be a meeting between World Triathlon and coaches at 8am to provide further information and an updated schedule for July 31st. A link to join this meeting will be shared directly with coaches shortly.
