After their first year, students have the option to pay to take online courses to fulfill their Physical Education (PE) credit requirements. Of the 31 juniors surveyed who took online physical education, 61% said they had cheated, and 74% said it was “very easy” or “somewhat easy to cheat.” A student who received weight training through BYU said: We filled out this long log to submit at the end of the course, but they had no way to verify anything. It was very easy to deceive. I think most people cheat, but you’d be surprised if someone actually cheats. ”
Providing the option to take physical education online only benefits students who can afford the high costs of courses and club sports, leaving other students behind. Instead, school districts should require students to take physical education in their master’s degree program, or encourage those who do not to participate in their master’s sports teams.
Although requirements can be met through many programs, most students choose to take online physical education classes through BYU, an MA-recommended program that costs $200 per 0.5 credit hour . One student said, “I signed up because I needed the credit, but I already did far more exercise than was required, as I play sports about 15 hours a week outside of school.” .
However, these students are an exception, and many students who take physical education online do not play sports. Because they can easily cheat, they don’t do regular exercise, which poses risks to both their physical and mental health.
Additionally, the high cost of these classes prevents many students from taking them. Additionally, the lack of advertising means that Hillview and La Entrada students who have friends or siblings who have taken online physical education are much more likely to not take physical education in their master’s program. Of the 80 students surveyed, 39% said they learned about the option of taking physical education online through a friend, and 29% said they didn’t know it was an option.
