So much for the Republican Party’s “back the blue” enthusiasm. Republicans are determined to reduce the federal government’s ability to fight crime and make our communities safer.
I understand that cynicism left this building a long time ago, but this is really rich. Amid the unrest following the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer, Republicans loudly and unfairly accused Democrats of wanting to “defund the police.” No matter how clearly leaders like Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi made it clear that the party wanted no such thing, Republicans continued to try to hang an anti-law enforcement sign around the necks of Democrats. .
Donald Trump’s Republican Party is hell-bent on Democratic-run cities being riddled with violent crime and general misconduct, meaning police are denied the resources and support they need to keep law-abiding citizens safe. I continue to draw pictures.
But if you ignore what Republicans are saying, they are the ones taking steps to literally defund law enforcement. Mr Johnson and his far-right House of Commons majority are clearly more interested in ideology than in preventing and punishing crime. And of course, about pleasing Trump.
The House Appropriations Committee boasted in a statement that the spending bill “harnesses the power of the purse to address the growing weaponization of bureaucracy within the FBI and ATF, which are part of the Department of Justice.” Ta.
The key word here is “weaponization.” That the Justice Department is being “weaponized” against Trump is a belief among MAGA true believers and, more broadly, conservatives, Christians, gun owners, and those who voted for Trump. People and even “tourists who participated in legitimate political discussions” were being “armed.” ” and violently stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
After all, they executed a search warrant at President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago mansion and seized a box containing top secret documents that the former president had refused to return for more than a year despite repeated polite requests. It was an FBI agent who did it.
The Justice Department, under Attorney General Merrick Garland, authorized the search. Garland then appointed an independent special counsel, Jack Smith, to prosecute Trump by a grand jury on charges of keeping these classified documents and for his role in the January 6 riot. We sought and obtained an indictment.
The Republican Party can no longer be the party of law and order because Trump is the czar of his party and desperately wants to escape accountability. The House of Representatives has decided to punish the FBI for keeping President Trump in good spirits and spreading the false narrative that President Trump is being persecuted. In addition to cutting the bureau’s operating budget, the House also cut the FBI’s construction costs by 95 percent. The department is currently in the process of rebuilding its aging headquarters building.
The ATF has been punished for its role in enforcing the nation’s gun laws and compiling statistics on firearms crimes, and for flouting Republican gunfighting ideology.
Both agencies provide much-needed support to local and state police departments across the country. I confidently predict that the next time there is a mass shooting in some red-tinted district, the Republican congressmen involved will be on the scene and thank the FBI and ATF for their assistance–Gov. This comes after voting to limit the agency’s capacity. .
Under Prime Minister Johnson’s leadership, defunding law enforcement agencies is becoming a habit. A bipartisan agreement on border policy negotiated by one of the most conservative Republicans in the Senate will help U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents stop illegal immigration, alleviate the humanitarian crisis and prevent the influx of illegal drugs such as fentanyl. It was supposed to provide new resources to help stop this. However, Prime Minister Johnson refused to introduce the bill to the House of Commons.
Campaigning Democrats need Republicans to own all of this if they want to regain the House majority in the fall. It’s certainly true that one of our two major political parties is taking concrete action to defund the police. That party happens to be the Republican Party.
