If a three-year-old girl, severely traumatized by war, is put through the unnecessary ordeal of having to sit still in Parliament, listen to a bunch of politicians indulge in virtue signaling.and participating in staged photo opportunities or forced physical affection?
This was orchestrated by a bright spot last week, a gloomy scene of self-congratulation at the expense of a young girl.
Serra, who lost her mother and younger brother and was seriously injured in Israel’s airstrike on Gaza, arrived in Malta with her father on Tuesday for treatment. But instead of receiving the care they desperately needed and were promised, both men were left parading around, grieving the loss of half their family.
Not only did the girl have to sit still in Parliament, she also met the Prime Minister Robert Abella and his wife Lydia are plotting to make the most political profit out of her horrific experience.
The “meeting” between the girl and the Abellas was filmed and immediately uploaded to the Prime Minister’s Facebook page, and TVM officially reported the event..
Was the prime minister so eager for publicity that he could not even let this opportunity pass?
This child’s heartbreaking story will elicit sympathy and support from even the weakest of hearts.
That’s exactly why Abella ironically jumped on the bandwagon and uploaded an image of herself greeting the girl, exposing her to even more unnecessary publicity.
The girl’s father had no other choice. Since the Abela government had given him a lifeline, he must have felt obligated to respond to the public relations campaign.
Moreover, it must have seemed like a small concession considering the benefit her daughter would receive from the prime minister’s “generosity.”
However, the fragility of the family’s situation highlights the callous insensitivity of subjecting the girl to further unnecessary suffering through unnecessary exposure..
There was little need to film a young girl meeting strangers who had suffered severe injuries and lost her mother and younger brother just a few weeks earlier.
What’s even sadder is that Abella wasn’t the only one to milk the girl’s story for political gain.
Opposition leader Bernard Grech also took a photo with the girl., give her a gift and a card. It really helps young children recover from the horrible horrors they have endured.
Later, Speaker Angle Farrugia was seen kissing the girl’s face and forcing himself on her.
This girl is seriously injured. She should be recovering in the hospital and she shouldn’t be crying in Congress or being kissed by strangers.
After the horror she experienced, she needs care and support and should avoid situations where she might feel anxious and unsafe.
The immediate aftermath of such a major trauma is critical, and a child should never be exposed to unnecessary experiences that are of no benefit to him or her.
Taking her to Parliament certainly did not benefit the child, and meeting the Prime Minister and his wife did not help her recovery.
There were no unwanted kisses from the speaker or hugs from opposition leaders. Politicians were the only people who profited from these cheap photo opportunities.
Did she seek advice from a clinician about whether it was appropriate to subject the girl to such an unnecessary encounter so soon after a traumatic experience?
Is the Children’s Committee Chair still in office? The Commissioner’s role is to advocate for the appropriate protection of children, especially the most vulnerable. It is her role to protect that child from shameless exploitation by our political leaders.
It is highly commendable that they made the necessary arrangements to transport the girl to Malta for treatment. But she has thousands more like her in Gaza. Desperate for evacuation and medical care.
Let us not forget that Malta has many opportunities to show its generosity to other children closer to home, many of whom remain in detention. After entering the country illegally.
What about Thousands of children drowned in the Mediterranean after being refused help by boats Or was it pushed back by the Maltese authorities? Or the people who lobbied to be locked up in the EU?
They are all innocent and just as troubled as little Sera.
Malta is working with the Libyan authorities to repatriate irregular migrants to Libya, where inhumane conditions have been documented.even children are subjected to humiliating and inhumane treatment.
International human rights organizations have blamed the government’s stance for the deaths of minors. If Marta had wanted to, she could have saved those children.
It is somewhat strange that Robert Abella, Bernard Gretsch and Angle Farrugia did not organize a photo shoot with the black children rescued from death’s door after the perilous Mediterranean crossing. Strangely, they were never invited to Congress. There were countless black faces that Angre Farrugia kissed.
The double standards and hypocrisy were clear, and the exploitation of the girl’s tragedy for the benefit of politicians was both unnecessary and distasteful.
They provide the girl with medical care, support her family, and strive for peace in the area, but keep her out of the public eye. The last thing she wants is a photo shoot with another politician desperate to get a few likes on her social media page.
