For years, most Indian women used kajal, a few lines of eyeliner, and a dab of lipstick before going out. That was the extent of their makeup. But now, wearing makeup is no longer an everyday thing. It’s art. It’s an art I never mastered, and it’s just like when I had my great-grandmother do my hair when I was a kid, watching my friends stare in the mirror, carefully contour, pat, brush, and gently I’m fascinated by the way they pat it down to improve its appearance. They are just as nice as before.
I have to admit that for me, makeup is a lot like cricket. Despite spending hours trying to understand why people are so obsessed with makeup, it’s baffling. That’s why this week’s cover story is especially interesting.
