World War II veterans were greeted with cheers and applause from a crowd of well-wishers as they arrived in Normandy, France, for the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings.
U.S. soldiers serving in units historically associated with D-Day are also in Normandy and will be taking part in more than 100 events marking the anniversary of June 6, 1944, when Allied forces launched the largest land, air, and sea military invasion in history. U.S. and allied leaders and officials are expected to attend many of the commemorative events to underscore the strength of U.S. commitment to European security and pay tribute to the heroes who fought to win freedom over oppression in World War II.
Although the number of heroes attending the annual D-Day commemorations in Normandy has dwindled, the gratitude and reverence for their service and sacrifice remains.
