Nine people, including a child, were injured after a “corrosive substance” was thrown at Clapham, south London.
London Fire Brigade said it responded to reports of a chemical incident on Lesser Avenue and provided first aid to a woman and two children.
London Ambulance Service said a total of nine people were treated at the scene and five were taken to a major trauma centre.
“Three patients were transported to local hospitals and one other patient was discharged at the scene,” it added.
According to police, three police officers were among the injured, but their injuries appear to be minor.
A helicopter is currently taking part in the search operation to capture the culprit.
Superintendent Alexander Castle said: “We are using resources across the Met to arrest this individual and work is underway to establish what led to this horrific incident.”
He said testing was ongoing but the material was considered “corrosive.”
Marina Ahmad, a member of the London Assembly, told X that a man threw acid at people in the car after the crash.
The incident happened just before 7.30pm and photos showed a white hatchback in the middle of the road with its doors open.
