To mark 40 years since the Jorvik Viking Center opened in York, a new stamp celebrating Britain’s Viking history and heritage will be released.
The eight stamps depict Viking relics and important sites from around Britain. “If someone were to ask, ‘What did the Vikings do for us?'” said David Gold, Royal Mail’s director of external policy. The answer is that they transformed Britain and left a lasting impact on its language, economy, society and political geography forever. ”
“Their impact is so great that it cannot be ignored,” he added. “We hope these stamps will encourage people to explore further this fascinating period in British history.”
David Jennings, chief executive of York Archeology, the charity that runs the Jorvik Viking Centre, said: “The Coppergate discoveries improve our understanding of how Vikings lived in Britain. “By fundamentally changing the city, Jorvik Viking Center has put York’s Nordic heritage on the international map.”
“After more than 40 years and with over 20 million visitors passing through our doors, it is a real honor to be featured on these stamps and to be part of this unique celebration of Viking culture.”
