Spring officially begins in March, and as the days get noticeably longer, there are some great new openings, including the return of Jeremy King, Claude Bossi’s Chelsea Bistro, and top-notch burgers and sandwiches.
mayfair – 20 Arlington St, St. James, London SW1A 1RJ
It’s been a long time coming, but Jeremy King’s return to London’s restaurant scene is finally here. A lucky few have already had the chance to try what is essentially Le Caprice 2.0 in all but name, with classic décor reflecting the original from its former heyday. The British/European menu features many original classics such as Bang Bang Chicken and Salmon Fishcakes with Sorrel Sauce, as well as Russell’s Caesar Salad, a tribute to Russell Norman. This will be one of his hottest restaurants opening in March. Don’t be surprised if there are some weird celebs out there.
About Arlington
chelsea – 315 Fulham Road, London SW10 9QH
Rounding out Claude Bossi’s three recent openings, he’s teaming up with his wife Lucy to launch a neighborhood French bistro with a very classic style. As with Arlington, there have already been some previews and the reputation for this restaurant is very strong, with the restaurant leaning towards its Lyonnaise roots in Bossi. The menu includes dishes such as casserole rabbit with mustard and tarragon sauce (pictured) and the very French frog’s legs in garlic sauce, as well as steaks with ongrette, Lyonnaise vol au vin, and sole of the tongue. Blowers etc. are lined up.

Marylebone – 7 Paddington St, London W1U 5QE
This Marylebone restaurant is the result of the people behind Wild Tavern teaming up with an Irish chef (Luke Ahern, former head chef at Corrigan’s Mayfair) and a Canadian restaurateur to launch a new live-fire restaurant . Taking over the old Carluccio’s, it has been completely transformed with an open kitchen in the center and dishes such as roasted south coast flounder and Galician beef ribs. We note that the bonfire flavor is felt even in the desserts, with Rum Baba and Charcoal Cream Chantilly appearing on the menu and feeling like must-haves.

mayfair – 20 Berkeley St, London W1J 8EE
20 Berkeley received some decent reviews when it first opened, but it clearly wasn’t good enough, so the restaurant was reborn as Niju. The team is from the same Creative Restaurant Group, but this time top chef Kazutoshi Endo is focusing on the reopening. It will be reborn as a Japanese grill and sushi bar with Endo responsible for some of the main dishes on the menu. Don’t expect the restaurant to change much in appearance (it was already a beautiful space). Nipper Kimber downstairs will remain, but the sandwich menu has been updated.
About Niju
soho – 13 Manette St, London W1D 4AW
Three Sheets has enjoyed great success in Dalston, with founder Max Venning having been responsible for the opening cocktail lists of many popular restaurants. The bar’s first foray into central London will be in the new Soho area, home to Daroko and Milk Beach, in a much larger building than its original location. The extra space means dining at the Soho outpost will be even more important, with a former Lyles chef expected to create salt beef sandwiches and croquettes on the menu. We also like the sound of some of the new cocktails, like the Scottish Coffee, which features butterscotch, salted coffee and shortbread cream.

covent garden – 23 Slingsby Place, London WC2E 9AB
Another bar debuting in central London in March is Oriole. They have plans for a permanent bar, but in the meantime, a fairly long-term pop-up is doing exactly what its name suggests, serving as a prelude to a permanent space. As with Three Sheets above, cocktails are still a big part of the new bar, but this opening, which will open as a full his restaurant in Covent Garden, is putting even more emphasis on the culinary side. On that menu, we predict the beef tartare sandwich (pictured) will be a big hit.

london fields – Unit 3, 143 Mare St, London E8 3RH
Whyte’s in London Fields has proven to be an underground hit. We have heard great things about the restaurant, although it has not yet been published in the mainstream press. White Rushen has earned a reputation for its smashburgers, and this weekend they’re focusing on that by opening only for lunch. I think this is going to be London’s next favorite burger, but at least they’re taking pre-orders online so you don’t have to queue. His menu of burgers looks great, but I also wanted to try his charred basque cheesecake and rum milkshake.

hackney – 1 Monkwood Way, London E3 2EG
Two Neapolitan brothers are teaming up to launch a new pizzeria with a little art in this new Hackney Wick restaurant. The pizzas feature the usual traditional ones, but there’s also an “artisanal” section offering toppings like truffle cream, mortadella DOP, burrata from Andria, hazelnut crumbs, and fresh basil. The restaurant also offers a set menu of slices and cocktails, and displays local and Italian art throughout the building.

Exmouth Market – 50 Exmouth Market, London EC1R 4QE
This sandwich shop is owned by Andre Blais, who founded the barbecue restaurant Bodean’s. Originally established as a delivery-only venture from Battersea, it gained tremendous support. At his permanent location, he’s bringing hot subs to his Exmouth market, with fixings like Texas BBQ brisket and fish goujons on the menu alongside things like poutine and chicken wings.
opening: March 23, 2024
