Nearly 200 firefighters were called to a fire at a Metropolitan Police station in east London.
Forest Gate Police Station has been evacuated and residents in the area have been told to keep their doors and windows closed due to heavy smoke.
Photos and videos on social media showed tall flames and smoke billowing from the building in the London borough of Newham.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, but police are not treating it as suspicious, London Fire Brigade and Scotland Yard said.
Police announced shortly before midnight Wednesday that the fire was under control.
The fire broke out just after 4:15 p.m., and about 175 firefighters and 30 fire engines were called to the scene. No injuries were reported, but an ambulance was called.
In a video posted on X, Superintendent Dan Card spoke outside a smoking police station and thanked firefighters for their quick response.
“I am happy to report that the building was evacuated properly and there were no injuries,” he said. “The fire is currently under control and the cause of the fire is not being treated as suspicious at this stage.
“I would like to reassure Newham residents that the police response in the area will not be affected and they can continue their mission of keeping the people of Newham and London safe.
