Finally, Starmer was asked about his position on the recognition of a Palestinian state, which he said the Government was committed to but gave no timeline for.
Thangam Devonair, a former shadow culture secretary who lost her seat to the Greens, said Labour’s lack of a coherent position on Gaza had caused it to lose support in some parts of the UK.
Starmer said the UK’s position on the Middle East had been discussed at NATO and that the British government’s “solemn obligation” was to contribute to an end to hostilities in the Middle East.
He said moving towards a two-state solution was being discussed at NATO meetings and that recognition of a Palestinian state would be part of that process.
Asked whether he would consider recognising a Palestinian state before the US, Starmer said: “I set our policy. I’m not going to follow anybody else.”
That’s all from the Prime Minister. He will now return to the UK after a very busy first week in office.
