World number one Magnus Carlsen capped off a dramatic day with a late win over Alireza Firouzja in what was technically a draw.
Vaishali Rameshbabu maintained her lead in Norwegian women’s chess after defeating Lei Tingjie at Armageddon, while Anna Muzyczuk recorded her second consecutive Classic victory, this time over Pia Kramling, to move into sole second place, just one point behind the leader. Women’s World Champion Zhu Wenjun won all five of her matches at Armageddon but remained in third place.

Norway Chess 2024 will feature an open and women’s six-player tournament with a total prize pool of 1.69 million NOK (approximately $160,000). It will take place in Stavanger from 27 May to 7 June, and players will play two rounds of classical chess (120 minutes/40 moves, with 10-second increments from the 41st move) against their opponents. The winner of a classical game receives 3 points, the loser 0 points. After a draw, players receive 1 point and compete for an additional 0.5 points in Armageddon (10 minutes for white and 7 minutes for black with a chance of a draw).
