Downing Street said the Prime Minister believed protests against Israel’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest were “wrong” and some scenes were “outrageous”.
Pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered in Malmö, Sweden, yesterday to protest Israel’s participation in the tournament as the conflict in the Gaza Strip continues.
There are also calls for a boycott of Eurovision following Israel’s entry. Rishi Sunak’s spokesman said the Prime Minister condemned the protests and called calls for a boycott “unfair”.
Asked about Mr Sunak’s views on the protests, No 10 spokesperson said: “The Prime Minister thinks these protests are wrong and some of the scenes we saw were outrageous.
“Just as we share deep concern about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and raise this issue regularly, so too when it comes to the debate around Eurovision and the I care incredibly about Jewish people around the world who love Vision.” Thinking about how they felt seeing this happen while hostages were still being held by Hamas in the aftermath of the brutal terrorist attack. He said he would encourage people to consider this when repeating calls for unjustified boycotts. ”
She added that “there will always be a right to peacefully protest” but “in terms of the Prime Minister’s opinion on the ground and whether it is right to call for a boycott of their actions”. No, he thinks that’s wrong. ”
