Exclusive: Deadline has revealed that MIPTV organizers are in talks to hold a new event, MIP London, in 2025.
This move will mark the end of MIPTV at Cannes, with the next edition in 2024 to be held as scheduled.
MIPTV and its sibling Mipcom will continue to operate in Cannes in October and are operated by RX France. deadline The parties are in top-level discussions with related parties about establishing the company in London in order to create a new market in time for the London TV screening in February.
MIPTV has long been a staple in the diaries of international television personalities. The industry traditionally gathers in Cannes for spring business meetings, lunches and chats. However, industry tensions and the success of new events are forcing event organizers to take stock, and we find ourselves in the midst of a post-COVID-19 perfect storm.
The move to London is part of RX France’s long-term plans for television events. Although no final decision has been made regarding the move to London, plans are thought to be well thought out and well underway. MIPTV has been around for over 60 years and has been held in Cannes since 1965, so this potentially means the end of an era.
Multiple sources confirmed talks about MIP’s reorganization and relocation to London. RX France did not respond to the lottery, but issued a statement. Deadlin’e: “We always aim to evolve our markets to meet the needs of the global industry. At this time, RX France has no plans to make any announcements regarding new or existing markets. We are committed to bringing you an excellent edition of MIPTV in April this year and Mipcom in October this year in Cannes, France, and we have announced that MipCancun will be held again for its 11th edition this November .”
Organizers have worked hard to reinvent MIPTV by leaning into co-production, FAST, and other trends. Last year he had over 5,000 participants from 80 countries and remains at a similar level in 2024, remaining his second largest industry event in the international television industry. Although the number of visitors is still large, this number is less than half of what it was in its heyday. Discussions about moving to London are a sign that RX France is leading the way in the face of a rapidly changing international television business.
November’s Content London event was a hit with audiences around the world, and March series mania at Lille continues to go from strength to strength, putting further pressure on stretched travel and expense budgets.
Meanwhile, London’s TV screenings have evolved from boutique gatherings to full-fledged show-and-tells for major international content companies. Created and hosted by All3Media, Banijay, Fremantle and ITV Studios, his 29 distributors will be participating this year.
There is no official market for London Television Screenings other than events held by each distributor. London TV Screening originally began as a way to tap into the hundreds of UK buyers for the BBC Studios Showcase. London in February will be a huge international TV show, with the New Year’s Market, which coincides with and complements the screenings, drawing even more buyers and sellers to the city.
Any controversy surrounding MIPTV, Cannes and London will have no impact on October’s MIPCON, the year’s biggest international television event and a staple on the calendar. All major sales companies have a large presence at the event, which also attracts hundreds of U.S. executives each year.
The future of MIPTV has been discussed in the international community for several years, and replacing London with Cannes would change the overall trend of international business. If 2024 ends up being the last April event for MIP in the south of France, it will be bittersweet for many executives and many will be booking farewell tickets to Cannes.
