Manchester United have undergone some big changes behind the scenes since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment in the club was announced in December, but the warnings are starting to arrive.
Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov does not expect the club to improve anytime soon, despite some great moves behind the scenes.
United have been busy in the January transfer window since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment was confirmed in December, although they were less active in the transfer window. Omar Berrada has been appointed CEO after working at City Football Group, and Dan Ashworth could be next in line.
Newcastle sporting director Ashworth is expected to agree a move to Old Trafford, with the Tyneside club reportedly eyeing Michael Edwards as a potential successor. Ashworth, formerly of Brighton, could be appointed ahead of what is expected to be United’s pivotal summer transfer window.
Before that, Erik ten Hag’s side have a chance to qualify for Europe next season after a slow start to this season. However, he believes there have been a lot of changes at the club since Berbatov left in 2012 and it could take time to turn things around.
“United sacked Man City’s chief operating officer and now they want to sack Newcastle’s sporting director,” Berbatov told Betfair. “They are trying to strengthen the boardroom.
“Obviously, once you know what type of person can help the club at managerial level, you try to identify that person and sign him. I hope they change the culture.”

But this means that United will not only be on the pitch, but also as a team. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe was asked about Ashworth at his press conference before the Premier League game against Bournemouth. He confirmed his secretary was familiar with the Magpies’ summer transfer plans and raised concerns about what a move to a rival would mean going forward.
“yes [he knows the plans]”And that’s why I say he’s in a position of power with a lot of intelligence and information,” Howe said. “That’s why this is a bit of an unusual situation. At some stage you have to draw the line and move things forward. It’s not my decision. I can’t control it.
“If you’re in that role, you need to live long enough to see the fruits of your labor,” he added. “Those who have done the best have been through periods of stability. There is change and it takes time for the process you want to happen. Dan’s time here was relatively short. Football is very I would say about the director’s position ‘too.’
“We work efficiently, have talented people in all departments, and keep things running smoothly. Succession planning is needed for all positions, including player managers. They have run the club very well since they arrived.”
