Manchester United are in the midst of a major transformation, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team pulling the strings ahead of a formal takeover, but they have a lot of work to do
Manchester United are busy behind the scenes as they prepare for Sunday’s Premier League game against Luton.
Erik ten Hag’s team have won three in a row and are back in contention for a top-four finish. Luton beat Newcastle and Brighton at Kenilworth Road and drew with Liverpool, but United will be full of confidence after last weekend’s impressive 2-1 win at Aston Villa.
Meanwhile, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is moving closer to officially taking over the club’s sporting leadership after the Premier League approved 25 per cent of his contract. The INEOS billionaire has already appointed Omar Berada as chief executive and work continues to bring in Dan Ashworth from Newcastle as sporting director. There is so much to note at Old Trafford. But thankfully you are in the right place. mirror football We will keep you informed of all the latest developments here.
Complaints about United loan players
It’s safe to say that Hannibal Mabry’s loan spell at Sevilla is not planned for now. The 21-year-old midfielder left in January in search of more regular appearances, but it has already turned into something of a nightmare.
He has played just 36 minutes in all competitions for Sevilla and has had a falling out with manager Quique Sánchez Flores, who criticized his behavior after making his debut against Girona last month. “We will give him the time he needs to understand where he is, that he is in Sevilla and what it means,” he said sharply. “We need to know where he is and we want to see him.”
Sevilla have reportedly received complaints about his behavior and are reluctant to trigger a clause in his loan deal that would make him a permanent deal for £15 million. Hannibal is under contract with United until June 2025, but his career has stalled.
Berbatov issues cultural warning
United have snapped up Berrada and are now looking to overhaul their hierarchy, targeting Southampton’s Jason Wilcox and Brighton’s Sam Jewell in addition to Ashworth. Former United striker Dimitar Berbatov believes this appointment will be crucial to the success of the INEOS acquisition.
“United sacked Man City’s chief operating officer and now they want to sack Newcastle’s sporting director,” Berbatov told Betfair. “They are looking to strengthen the boardroom and of course once they know what type of person is going to help the club at board level they will try to identify that person and sign them. Changing the culture is almost always the right decision.”
Mr Ratcliffe and his INEOS colleagues Sir Dave Brailsford and Jean-Claude Blanc have extensive experience in this area. However, there is still much work to be done if United are to turn things around in the summer.
Mr. Keene lists the biggest problems
Roy Keane says Ratcliffe and whoever he appoints to run United will have to deal with the shocking recruitment crisis that has hampered progress over the past few years. Financial and investment status of UEFA’s European clubs report As of the end of the 2023 financial year, United’s player transfer fees totaled €1.42 billion (approximately £1.21 billion), making them the most expensive team in history.
“The role of scouts has changed a lot compared to our days when we had scouts in the North West and scouts in Scotland. But now we have the funding available and the scouting network is like this. It’s not surprising that things have changed,” Keane said on the Stick to Football podcast. “The way Brighton recruits and the way Newcastle recruit is key. Manchester United have had a lot of problems over the last few years, but recruitment is probably where they’ve gotten the most wrong.”
