Manchester United have announced that work will begin next week to modernise their men’s first-team building at their Carrington Training Complex.
The £50 million project will see all areas of the building refurbished, with construction work due to continue throughout the 2024-2025 season.
The work will be carried out by architecture firm Foster and Partners, who were also responsible for the redesign of Wembley Stadium and the plans for Lusail Stadium in Qatar.
United said Foster and Partners would be “focused on creating a high-performing, collaborative environment for players and staff”.
They further claimed Foster and Partners would provide “a world-class football facility with a positive culture that will underpin future success”.
Work is expected to begin on Monday, with the architecture firm expected to initially focus on the gym, medical, nutrition and recovery areas.
Temporary upgrades will also be made to the rest of the Carrington facility to ensure players and staff can operate effectively at the start of the new season.
Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe said of the work being carried out at Carrington: “We want to create a world-class environment in which our teams can win.”
“After a thorough inspection of Carrington’s training facilities and meeting with the men’s first team players it was clear that standards were below those of its peers. This project will see Manchester United’s training ground once again be upgraded to the highest standards.”
“Lord Foster, a Manchester native, worked with the team at Manchester United and provided great inspiration for the design and we look forward to seeing the improvements to the facilities and, most importantly, the pitch.”
Lord Foster, founder and chairman of Foster and Partners, said: “We are delighted to be leading the refurbishment of Manchester United’s training facility at Carrington.”
“Our goal is to modernize and revitalize the building as a catalyst for future football success, creating a space that inspires a culture of collaboration, unity and belonging.”
“As a proud Mancunian, I am particularly honoured that Foster + Partners has been entrusted with this responsibility and will strive to ensure our design captures the industrial spirit, courage and ambition that symbolises Manchester and Manchester United.”
Until now, training sessions at the Carrington training ground have focused on the club’s Academy and women’s teams.
United’s latest development was the opening of a £10 million state-of-the-art women’s football academy facility last summer.
As a result, Manchester United will invest £60 million across the football division over the next phase.
Former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo suggested they should do so after leaving the Premier League giants for Saudi Arabian club Al Nasr.
Ronaldo previously insisted the men’s training facilities have not changed since he left the Red Devils to join Real Madrid in 2019.
“Since Alex Ferguson left, there has been no evolution at the club. Nothing has changed,” Ronaldo said in an interview with Piers Morgan.
‘he [Ferguson] He knows better than anyone that the club is not on the path it should be. He knows it. Everyone knows it.
“People who don’t see that… it’s because they don’t want to see. They’re blind. Since Sir Alex left, there’s been no progress at the club. Nothing has changed.”
Since the arrival of Ratcliffe and Ineos at the end of the year, the focus has been on supporting the top teams.
After completing the purchase of a 25% stake in the club, they agreed to inject the necessary funds into updating infrastructure relating to the club.
