The Metropolitan Police’s deputy superintendent said firearms officers were called out because unarmed officers were threatened and there was “genuine concern” that people might be harmed.

The man shot dead by police in south-east London was armed with a crossbow, knife, sword and hatchet.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said two shots were fired after officers unsuccessfully tried to speak to him.
As is standard practice in police shootings, surveillance authorities have launched an investigation.
The 30-year-old man was wearing body armor when he entered the premises in London’s Surrey Quays area. and threatening residents.
The IOPC said he was known to at least one person at the venue.
Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist said firearms officers were called in after an unarmed officer was threatened and he had “genuine concerns” for the safety of those inside.
“Armed officers were called and attempted to get the man to surrender. They entered the property and shots were fired.”
“Officers, assisted by paramedics, administered emergency first aid to the man, who was wearing protective gear, but unfortunately he died.
“Weapons recovered from the scene include crossbows, knives, swords and hatchets,” he added.
He paid tribute to the police involved and said he believed they helped prevent further loss of life.
Two people on the Bywater Place property suffered minor injuries.

IOPC Regional Director Mel Palmer said: “Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic incident.
“The man’s next of kin have been informed and we will contact them in due course to explain our role.
“We will provide regular updates during the investigation.”
The IOPC’s role is to independently investigate police actions and decisions.
A report has been sent to the coroner and a post-mortem examination will be carried out.
