A man has died after falling from the Tate Modern.
The death at the London tourist attraction is being treated as unexpected but is not understood to be suspicious.
Emergency services were called to the gallery today after reports a man had fallen from the Tate Modern.
Police said the man, who has not yet been identified, died at the scene despite the efforts of paramedics and medical workers.
“Police were called at 10.45am to reports of a man falling from the Tate Modern in Bankside, SE1,” the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
“Officers, London Air Ambulance and London Ambulance Service attended. Despite the efforts of medical personnel at the scene, the man unfortunately died at the scene.
“Investigations are underway to identify the man and notify his next of kin.
“The scene and cordon remain in place.
“This death is currently being treated as unexpected, but is not believed to be suspicious.”
A Tate Modern spokesperson said in a statement: “It is with great sadness that we report that a member of the public passed away at Tate Modern this morning.”
“Police are not treating this event as suspicious, but out of respect we have closed the gallery for the day.” At this time all our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends. ”
Tate Modern announced on social media that it would be closed for the day.
A post on X/Twitter, in response to another user, said: “Tate Modern will be closed for the day while we respond to the incident at the scene.” If you have tickets for today’s exhibition, we will contact you directly to reschedule your reservation. thank you. ‘
The gallery also confirmed on social media that it will reopen tomorrow at 10am.
This is the second tragedy involving the gallery in the past four years.
It’s not clear where today’s man fell from, but in August 2019 a young boy was thrown from an observation deck by an unknown man.
The young Frenchman had been visiting the Tate on Southbank with his family when agitated teenager Jonty Bravery, then 17, spotted him and grabbed him. I threw it out of space.
It was later revealed in court that on the day of the incident, teenager Jonty Bravery had ambushed someone and was planning to kill them.
He was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 15 years.
The boy suffered a brain hemorrhage, a broken leg and arm, and a fractured vertebrae, but miraculously survived the fall at the museum.
