Welling United were eliminated at the second round stage of the London Senior Cup after losing to Charlton Athletic’s Under-21s on Wednesday night.
After a much-changed Wings side took the lead in the first half thanks to Josh Johnson, the Addicks’ young players came on in the second half and scored two goals in three minutes to seal a place in the quarter-finals.
Young Wings stopper Jawan Pitterson warmed up his gloves early on with a smart stop at Toby Bower’s near post, but then made a superb save moments later to put Kai Enslin’s ducking header over the bar. I flicked it over the top.
On the other side, just after the 30th minute, Dominic Odusanya took a shot from a long ranger, which deflected and went wide. Two minutes later, Johnson scored his first goal for the club since joining on loan from Oxford United. took the lead.
He overcame the visiting team’s hesitant defense and ran in front of the goal to score a 1-on-1, giving his team an advantage going into halftime.
The Wings kept the Addicks at bay with some pretty docile shots from long range from Pitterson, and when Henry Lyra broke through one-on-one, Pitterson stood firm and thwarted the pacey winger.
But there was nothing he could do about the eventual equalizer. Charlton’s versatile youngster Patrick Casey turned the game on its head with an unstoppable shot from distance into the bottom left corner with 11 minutes remaining, and then again with just three minutes left. Score a volley from close range.
Rod Stringer’s side will turn their attention to Barnet in the last 16 of the FA Trophy on Saturday.
