If you’re ordering takeaway in London tonight, you might have some bad news, especially if you live in certain areas of the capital.
And it’s not just the widespread strike action by Deliveroo, JustEat and Uber Eats delivery drivers.
Another thing that most of us probably don’t think about when taking out takeout is the hygiene standards of the kitchen where the grub is prepared.
Do you have a kitchen area and its equipment? But what about the chef? Are all chefs properly following safety protocols?
Unfortunately, the answer to these questions at many eateries turns out to be “no.”
There are 156 fast food restaurants across London’s 32 boroughs with a food hygiene rating of zero.
One district in particular was found to be in the worst situation, with the proportion of restaurants far below the required level.

Sorry Waltham Forest residents, but of the 877 takeaways in the borough, 47 have a zero rating.
This is equivalent to 15.6% of all restaurants.
A further 71 restaurants received only a 1 rating and 17 restaurants received a 2 rating, MyLondon reports.
According to the Food Standards Agency, a hygiene rating of 0 means urgent improvement is required, and 1 means significant improvement is required.
Food Standards Agency: Meaning of hygiene assessment
- 0 – Urgent improvement required
- 1 – Significant improvement needed
- 2 – need improvement
