L’Enclume in the Lake District and Moor Hall in Orton maintain their prestigious ‘world class’ ratings in the inaugural Good Food Guide Awards. However, Manchester’s Higher Ground lost out on the Best New Restaurant award, which was won by London’s Mountain.
The winners were announced on January 30th at a ceremony at the Theater Royal Drury Lane in London. L’Enclume is a three Michelin star restaurant based in Cartmel, headed up by Simon Logan. And Mark Birchall’s two Michelin-starred Moor Hall restaurants were just two of four restaurants to achieve the World Class rating, which recognizes the UK’s top restaurants.
Simon Logan’s Our Farm, closely associated with Lancrum, beat out restaurants from across the South to win the Best Farm to Table Restaurant award. While Higher Ground was the only Manchester-based restaurant shortlisted for this year’s award, The Good Food Guide featured several restaurants and locations across the North. This comes just days after Higher Ground was awarded the coveted Bib Gourmand from Michelin.

Meese in North Yorkshire and The Cedar Tree in Farham Hall, Cumbria are among six restaurants named as new Specially Rated Restaurants for 2024. Outside of venues, Helmsley and the Howardian Hills in North Yorkshire was named the most exciting foodie destination.
Kent’s Sportsman beat out Rank Room to win the Restaurant of the Year award. The Kent-based restaurant also achieved the prestigious World Class rating.
Editor Elizabeth Carter said of the award: “The Good Food Guide enters a new era with a new look and new rating system, but the guide’s deep-rooted values remain the same. There has always been a lot of excitement about our awards. However, this year we have overhauled the awards to better reflect the rapidly changing British eating out scene. In addition to the winners, all restaurants featured on this list I’m extremely proud of the entire awards list because it sets the standard for evaluating all restaurants in the industry.”
This year, The Good Food Guide has replaced the usual numerically ranked list with ‘outstanding’ and ‘world class’ ratings in addition to individual awards. All restaurants are comprehensively inspected by co-editors Elizabeth Carter and Chloe Hamilton and a team of 30 anonymous inspectors, and are nominated for exciting new dishes and recommendations from Good Food Guide readers. You will receive tips to raise your hospitality flag.
