Dear residents of Kentish Town, we come with bad news. A local subway station that closed last summer is scheduled to remain closed until at least September. In other words, it would take another seven months to walk the road to Tufnell Park or take the bus to Camden.
Kentish Town’s Northern Line station will close in June 2023 and TfL said both escalators would need to be replaced. The original reopening date was set rather vaguely as “summer 2024,” but it has since been postponed.
Regarding the opening date in September, a TfL spokesperson said:
“The refurbishment of the escalators at Kentish Town Tube Station is progressing well and the installation of the new escalators is expected to be completed this summer.
“However, during unrelated work to improve other parts of the station, we have identified assets that require essential repairs to ensure the safe operation of the station.
“Our engineers are working hard to prepare for the station’s planned reopening in September, while ensuring the high safety standards that our colleagues and customers expect from the subway are met.”
As currently, the non-underground station at Kentish Town station (which provides Thameslink services to St Albans, Sutton, St Pancras, Blackfriars and more) will remain open.
Kentish Town is not the only station on the Northern Line undergoing renovations. The majority of the line will close later this year, with Colindale also closing for a further six months from June.
