In the Middle East, Israeli President Isaac Herzog led Israel’s response, expressing his “heartfelt gratitude” to the U.S. leader for his “friendship and unwavering support for the Israeli people” and for his service as the first U.S. president to visit Israel during wartime.
“As a true ally of the Jewish people, he symbolizes the unbreakable bond between our two peoples,” he said, sending his heartfelt congratulations to the entire Biden family.
“Your unwavering support, especially during the war, has been invaluable. Thank you for your leadership and friendship,” Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant wrote to X.
The remaining members of America’s so-called “Five Eyes” intelligence alliance, which has been working more closely with Biden on key global challenges, including China’s rapidly rising global presence, also made glowing comments.
Biden’s campaign “failed”
As Australia woke up to the latest dramatic developments in the US presidential election, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised Biden’s leadership and continued contribution.
“The Australia-US alliance is stronger than ever, driven by our shared commitment to democratic values, international security, economic prosperity and climate action, for present and future generations,” he said.
The Australian media was not as kind.
“Joe Biden resigns: How the US president’s aides failed,” read a front-page headline in the Sydney Morning Herald.
The Australian newspaper, owned by Maddock, delivered a scathing verdict in the words “this very age is defined by the follies and obsessions of old men” and concluded that Biden had done the party “great damage” by rejecting the “clearly mentally declining old man” that everyone saw.
Democrats now “must scramble to choose a replacement,” a process that “will inevitably seem less legitimate to anyone but the winner,” he added.
But world leaders continued to pay tribute to the leader, praising his personal qualities and supportive policies.
