In the 2024 T20 World Cup, Virat Kohli’s form was a cause for concern for the team as the star batsman managed just 75 runs ahead of the final. However, Kohli stepped up when it mattered most, scoring 76 in the final against South Africa in Barbados to seal the win. During a conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kohli revealed that he had zero confidence heading into the final and how then head coach Rahul Dravid and India captain Rohit Sharma motivated him.
Kohli also revealed that he had even told Dravid that he had not performed well for the team in the tournament and suggested that arrogance had marred his performance during the tournament.
“Nothing I did worked. When you feel ‘I can do it’, arrogance only comes into play. Basically, when your ego comes into play, the game gets away from you. Sometimes, it’s important to leave that arrogance behind. In the final, there was no room for arrogance, especially as everything was going well. Once I started respecting the game, it benefited the team. It was a big lesson for me,” Kohli said.
Kohli also admitted that he was happy to have contributed to the team in this crucial match.
“I gave my all to every last ball. I can’t explain what was going on in my mind. I lost hope for a moment but then Hardik got his wicket and I got my energy back with every ball. I am happy that I was able to contribute to the team in such a big match after a tough period. It is an unforgettable memory. I was happy that I could lead the team to a fighting total,” Kohli added.
After helping India win the title, Kohli bid farewell to his T20I career and passed the baton to the next generation.
