Cala Mariolu, located on the east coast of Sardinia, was named the second most beautiful beach in the world in 2024, after Trunk Bay in the US Virgin Islands.
This hidden gem is tucked away amongst a dramatic, rugged coastline where stunning blue waters meet white pebble beaches, surrounded by lush greenery.
Popular for its untouched splendor, Cala Mariol attracts hikers looking to soak up spectacular views from the cliffs, but it can get quite busy during peak summer months.
With an average temperature of 19°C in May and rising to 26°C in August, Sardinia enjoys a comfortable 18°C until late October, making it a magnet for tourists all year round. The cove’s capacity is limited to 650 people, but it can sometimes feel too crowded during the busy summer season, reports the Express.
Sardinia travel expert Claudi Tavani recommends an early visit to Cala Mariol, recommending arriving by boat no later than 8.30am to experience its tranquility.
Early risers can join boat tours that depart from various parts of Sardinia at 7 a.m. and arrive in Cala Magliol by 8:30 a.m., when the crowds have thinned. Tavani described a recent trip with Helios Turismo from Arbatax as “wonderful,” enjoying a quiet 30 minutes where “there was literally nobody there.”
Alternative routes to the beach include a private charter boat or a challenging hike down to the rocky coastline, said to be one of the best hiking routes on the island. The 6km trail starts from Localita Piredda, on the Gorgo plateau, about 45 minutes’ drive from Baunei.
For those looking for a quiet day on the beach, TripAdvisor reviews recommend visiting later in the year, around September, with one person describing it as a “must-see spot in your life.”
Their review said, “This pristine, wild, hidden gem of Sardinia is one you will never forget. The beaches change color from pinkish cream to the light blues and greens of the deep, clear water. This is true natural beauty and wilderness at its best. I visited in September and there weren’t many people so I was able to fully enjoy it. It’s something I will remember for the rest of my life.”
Be aware that there are no lifeguards at Cala Mariol and the water gets deep quickly, but the beach is well protected from the wind so currents are minimal and it’s a safe place to swim and snorkel, and there are also a few small caves nearby that you can swim into.
According to Skyscanner, there are direct flights to Sardinia from London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Birmingham. The cheapest airport is Cagliari, with flights starting at £51 direct. Flights to Alghero cost £52 and Olbia cost £55.
