Singapore Airlines Flight 21, which launched in 2020, is the world’s longest direct commercial flight, covering a distance of 9,537 miles in 18 hours and 40 minutes.

Flights from JFK depart every day at approximately 11:30pm and arrive in Singapore at approximately 6am two days later. Flights in the reverse direction take off at 12:30pm and arrive in New York at approximately 6pm the following day. Since November 2020, these flights have been following a geometrically optimal great circle route near the North Pole, which provides the shortest distance between any two points on Earth.
Flights may also take longer routes with more ground distance, known as Jetstream routes, which save time and fuel. Antony McNeill, Singapore Airlines’ director of food and beverage, explained to USA Today Travel the importance of meal timing and composition on long-haul flights. “The aim is to have the first meal service within three hours of departure,” he said.
“Then six or seven hours later the crew comes back, so you’re getting a pretty substantial meal during the flight, so if you want to sleep on departure, you’re not going to miss that,” he continued. “The meals that we serve you during that time of flight are designed to help you feel more rested,” he continued. “They’re designed to keep you fuller for longer, so you don’t have to snack.”
Singapore Airlines ticket prices include meals served on mid- to ultra-long-haul flights, which include a bread roll, main course, cheese and crackers, and dessert. The latest economy menu dishes include egg noodles, chai sam, stir-fried beef in oyster sauce with carrots, and paneer korma with eggplant masala and basmati rice.
During the long flights, passengers are free to help themselves to fresh fruit, a selection of breads and muffins, and onion focaccia with turkey pastrami. The airline also serves complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. However, Singapore Airlines does not hold the world record for the longest continuous flight. That honor was given to a small fixed-wing aircraft, the Cessna 172, which achieved the world’s longest continuous flight in the late 1950s, with an astounding record of 64 days, 22 hours and 19 minutes.
The longest scheduled passenger flight to date was operated by Air Tahiti Nui on a Boeing 787-9, flying nonstop from Tahiti’s Faaa International Airport to Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport. The epic journey covered a distance of 9,765 miles with a scheduled flight time of 16 hours and 20 minutes. However, the route only operated from March to April 2020. Due to the pandemic, the airline chose not to suspend operations during those months, as all passengers had to disembark at Los Angeles International Airport and clear US customs.
This was made possible by operating with a reduced number of passengers, about 150, and eliminating the need for refuelling. The route also set a record for the longest domestic flight in the world, as it flew within French territory.
In 2026, Australian airline Qantas is expected to take the title of world’s longest flight from Singapore Airlines, thanks to its highly anticipated nonstop round-trip flights from Sydney to New York and London. These flights are expected to take up to 20 hours each way.
