India will face Pakistan in the most anticipated group match of the 2024 T20 World Cup in New York.
Pakistan are reeling from a shock Super Over defeat to the United States in Dallas on Thursday and will be looking to bounce back in one of sport’s fiercest rivalries.
Only two teams can qualify from Group A and India went into the tournament as one of the favourites despite not winning a major international tournament since the 2013 Champions Trophy, having kicked off their campaign with a resounding win over Ireland.
But serious questions have been raised about the pitch at the temporary stadium in Nassau County, with the ICC admitting it is not up to standard and “remedial measures” must be taken before major matches can be played.

Rain stops the match! India 8-0 (1 over) – Rohit 8, Kohli 0
Alas, it started to rain again and the referee ordered the players off the field. Once again the fun was spoiled. Let’s hope it’s just a passing shower.

India 8-0 (1 over) – Rohit 8; Kohli 0
Afridi charges in for the first ball of the match, Rohit flicks it towards leg, the outfield is sluggish and they are given two runs, the boundary fielders realising the ball was not running towards them.
Third ball of the match See the first six – With brilliant timing, Rohit flicked the ball off his feet in front of square and it flew into the stands! A flick of the wrist was all it took.
Afridi responded well with two dot balls and then made a strong appeal for lbw off the last ball, but Pakistan opted not to review, scoring eight runs from the over.

India vs Pakistan
Given the overcast skies and a pitch that is proving difficult to score on, this could be a battle of the bowlers.
Pakistan’s first over was bowled by Shaheen Afridi with Rohit Sharma facing off and Virat Kohli at the non-striker’s end.

India vs Pakistan – Pakistan wins the toss and chooses to field
The atmosphere was raucous even at the toss! Babar Azam won. Pakistan batted first and chose to defend. Not surprising, given the overcast skies.
India captain Rohit Sharma acknowledged that if they had won the coin toss, they would have been given the bowl too.

India v Pakistan – Pitch Inspection
The rain has stopped, the covers have been removed and the umpire has come to inspect the pitch. I think there will be a slight delay before the start but it shouldn’t be too long (famous last words…)
