NEW DELHI: Both India and Australia have produced dominant performances to top their respective groups and progress to the T20 World Cup’s Super 8. India last faced Australia in the ICC ODI World Cup final, losing on home soil, and will once again take on Australia in the Super 8 showdown on June 24 at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia.
Was the India vs Australia T20 World Cup Super 8 match pre-determined?
That’s right.
The groups for the Super Eight stage were determined by the seeds assigned to the teams during the Qualification Stage, which consisted primarily of four groups.
If a pre-seeded team does not advance to the Super Eight, their seeding will automatically be transferred to the next best-performing team in their group.
A notable example is when Pakistan was eliminated in the group stage and the second best team in Group A, the United States, inherited the A2 seed.
All you need to know – 2024 T20 World Cup Seeding System?
For the first time, the ICC has introduced a pre-tournament seeding system for the T20 World Cup, which has clearly outlined the path for the Indian team and revealed the three teams they will face in the Super 8 if they finish in the top two in Group A. India will face Australia, Bangladesh and Afghanistan in the Super 8.
The seeding system made group stage performance virtually irrelevant for the top two finishers.
For example, Australia had a perfect record in Group B, winning against Oman, England, Namibia and Scotland. Despite their impressive record, the ICC allocated Australia the B2 seed, meaning that even though they finished second in Group B, they will face India, Bangladesh and Afghanistan in the Super Eight.
The main objective of introducing the seeding system was to provide a clearer communication of the schedule to spectators travelling to the Caribbean islands.
However, this unintentionally resulted in some of the group stage matches being rendered inconsequential.
