A single woman was so irritated with her date’s behavior at the end of the night that she accused him of being rude.
But her bad date sparked a vastly different reaction, with critics calling her “obnoxiously high-maintenance” and women in her corner calling his behavior a “red flag.”
Annie Shaffer (@anniekshaffer) always tells the truth when she talks about boys online.
She talked about her memorable first date with a man in a TikTok video, but it wasn’t for the right reasons.
“I just got back from a date and I can’t believe this guy did this,” she said.
She knew before the date was over that they weren’t compatible, but they still “had a good time” and had “good conversations.”
Annie knew he wasn’t her man, but she still gave him a ride home.
As they walked to his Tesla, she expected him to open the door, but instead headed straight for the driver’s side.
“I was a little surprised. Usually the guy I’m on a date with opens the door for me,” she said.
She wasn’t familiar with car models and didn’t know how to open the door.
The other guy just told her to “figure it out.”
For several minutes, she stood outside, struggling to open the door, while he sat inside, trying to guide her to open the door.
“I was trying to grab the handle with my long fingernails and pull it open, and it was very uncomfortable,” she explained.
He said she was doing this as a “bit of a thing”, a comedic act, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Annie didn’t know how to use the handle and kept looking for someone to help her.
“Finally, he got up, moved around and pushed it,” she said.
Although the design didn’t make sense to her at the time, she thanked him and got into the car, hoping he would close the car behind her.
From there his strange behavior got even worse.
“He leaves the door wide open. He walks around trying to get into the car. He doesn’t even close the door for me. And the door is wide open. I had to extend it and pull the door in,” she explained.
“At this point I knew this wasn’t my boyfriend, but I thought, ‘Oh, this is rude.'”
As they drove away, she told him, “You can just be a gentleman.”
He replied that it wasn’t to his liking, so she used the word “young” again to describe him.
She joked that not knowing how to open a Tesla door could be the doom of all future relationships.
“I’m going to die alone. If I have these options, I’m going to die alone,” she said.
Not everyone was on her side, with men and women divided in their comments about the scenario.
“I don’t know what happened on this date, but he definitely didn’t like you,” a male viewer wrote.
“I should have taken him home in an Uber right away, like he said he would,” the woman said in her defense.
“But you already knew he wasn’t right, so why bother saying, ‘Aren’t you going to open the door?’ Just move on,” a male voice says. I put it on.
Another woman added: “You’re so obnoxiously high maintenance.”
“You couldn’t stand it 100% on the date. He just wants to take you home and get you out of his life,” someone else said.
Another male TikTok user wrote, “I would have opened the door, but I think you made it clear you weren’t interested in him.”
