Following his instructions with binoculars, I spotted the majestic bird. It has a dark brown head with a tufted crown, a white chest, and sharp yellow eyes. Luke explained this to me. “Also known as the ‘leopard of the sky,’ this eagle is one of the largest birds of prey in the world, with a wingspan of up to 2.5 meters and the largest bird of prey in Africa.” It stays on a perch, then suddenly takes off and disappears into the distance.

Most of the first morning is taken up by my eagerness to identify every bird I see. This means you will only advance 200 yards from the lodge in the first hour. But in the afternoon, head directly into the dry sand forest, home to rare and endemic species.
Surrounded by an elephant exclusion fence, we get out of the car and set off on foot. Following strict protocols, your guide will lead you from the front with a large-caliber rifle in hand. Orchids and lichens abound, and some of Lebombo’s wattle trees are thought to be over 1,000 years old. The dense vegetation makes it difficult to get a good look at the birds, but you can still spot plenty of them, including the African Green Pigeon, the unmistakable long-tailed Flycatcher, and the Great Crested Barbet. Next, we introduce the endemic pink-throated twinspot, a distinctive waxbill with a bright head and black chest with white spots. This bird only exists in a few other locations nearby and is a favorite of many visiting birdwatchers.
My knowledge of birds is mainly limited to the British Isles, but here in South Africa I have little use for it. That’s why my guide is invaluable. When we got back in the car, we encountered a zebra with a red-billed oxpecker picking at ticks and parasites on its back. Walk a little further and you’ll get a glimpse of the financial situation in the south. The black-and-white shrike is also known as the butcher bird because of its habit of impaling its prey on acacia thorns for later consumption. Then, as it passed a small water source, bright colors flashed and it perched on a small branch. This is a malachite kingfisher. Bees, on the other hand, are busy searching for insects along the water’s edge. Over the course of three days, the binoculars helped us accurately identify 68 species of birds. There are about 30 things that technology has struggled with. In some cases, the bird may be too far away, obscured by twigs, or the image may be blurry, but in many cases, if visibility is good and clear, binoculars are excellent for identification. What’s more, each button press saves a photo, allowing you to create a comprehensive photo diary to peruse later.
On our last day, as the sun dipped low on the horizon, we stopped in a clearing next to the water at Mbubu Dam. It is a wonderful setting for those who enjoy sunsets. A few blue-cheeked bee-eaters flit over the still waters, a flock of white-winged ducks complete their final flight, and nearby hippopotamuses quiet their night roars. After finishing our biltong and drinks, we head back to the car and head out under the stars. I sit and reminisce about my first birding safari experience. We saw over 100 species of birds and saw the Big 5 and countless other wildlife along the way. The trip was more valuable than I expected.
