Conservative MPs have criticized a party leader who was suspended for accusing London’s mayor of being controlled by Islamists.
New Forest West leader Desmond Swayne said Chancellor Rishi Sunak was right to withdraw the Conservative whip from Ashfield MP Lee Anderson.
The former deputy leader currently sits in the House of Commons as an independent.
Sir Desmond, 67, said: “I am disappointed that he has been suspended for his abuse of Sadiq Khan, but his refusal to apologize left the Prime Minister with no other choice.”

However, Lord Desmond said it was entirely appropriate to consider aspects of Islam, such as the role of women, attitudes to homosexuality, Islamic jurisprudence, and teachings on apostasy.
“In a liberal society, important aspects of public life, such as Islam, must adapt to the discomfort of public scrutiny and free discussion,” he said.

Mr Anderson was suspended on February 24 after refusing to apologize for comments he made on GB News during a debate on an article by former Home Secretary Fareham MP Suella Braverman.
He said “Islamists” controlled London, Mr Khan and Labor leader Keir Starmer.
In a statement published by GB News, Mr Anderson acknowledged that his words “might have been clumsy” but said they were taken “out of pure frustration at what is happening to our beautiful capital.” was born,” he said.
