Bobbi, who was voted the world’s oldest dog, was stripped of the title following controversy over his real age.
Bobi, who lived in Portugal, was said to be 30 years and 268 days old. Recognized as the oldest in the world by Guinness World Records (GWR) February last year.
According to reports, he passed away in October 2023 at the age of 31 years and 165 days.
However, G.W.R. started an investigation Due to doubts about his real age, he was renamed Portuguese Dog.
This investigation took place even though his birth had been clearly confirmed by the Portuguese government’s pet database and the national veterinarian union.
Bobbi is a purebred Rafeiro de Alentejo, a type of livestock guard dog with an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years.
When Bobbi was named the world’s oldest dog, it broke the record held since 1939 by the Australian Cattle Dog, who died at the age of 29 years and 5 months.
GWR currently says there is no conclusive evidence that Bobi lived that long.
Mark McKinley, GWR’s head of records, said in a statement that while microchip data from Portugal’s official database was central to Bobi’s evidence, proof of age for dogs born before 2008 was required for the chip to be fitted. It turned out it wasn’t necessary, he said.

“Additional veterinarian statements provided as proof of Bobi’s age also cited this microchip data, leaving no conclusive evidence to conclusively prove Bobi’s date of birth. ” he wrote.
“With no conclusive evidence available at this time, we cannot honestly claim to maintain Bobi as a record holder and uphold the high standards he has set for himself.”
Bobi spent her entire life with Leonel Costa and his family in the rural village of Conqueiros, Portugal.
Costa did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
