Gardener’s World star Carol Klein has given an update on her health after previously revealing her breast cancer diagnosis.
Gardening guru Carole, 78, told her followers she had cancer in early May. She revealed that she had undergone a double mastectomy, and then joyfully announced she was cancer-free while presenting at the BBC’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
“A few weeks ago I posted on Instagram to tell you all about what’s been going on with me. Earlier this year I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a double mastectomy,” Carole shared in an Instagram video.
She continued: “I had another small operation the week before Chelsea which I think Chelsea made it through and then whilst I was at Chelsea I got a call from my surgeon, Dr Anna Conway, with the very happy news that the cancer was gone.”
“I’m posting this because I really want to thank you all – everyone who has sent me so many lovely messages and been so encouraging,” Carole told Birmingham Live, adding: “A huge thank you to all the team at North Devon District Hospital, my breast cancer team – they’ve been amazing. Thank you to the NHS.”
She added: “Now we know that everyone is affected by cancer in some way – ourselves, our friends and relatives.”
“And I want you to know that I’m thinking of you, sending you lots of love and lots of strength, and toasting to the future.”
Upon receiving her diagnosis in May, the TV star bravely told fans: “Hi everyone! It’s so great that the sun is finally coming out! Just wanted to check in with you all and let you know what’s been going on with me lately.”
“A few weeks ago I was referred to the breast care clinic at my local hospital where after tests I was diagnosed with breast cancer. After discussing it with all my family and doctors the decision was made to have a double mastectomy which took place on April 3rd.
“Since then, I’ve been recuperating and recovering at home. I’ve been planting a lot of seeds and finishing up my next book. There’s been a lot of opportunity for that.”
“Well, I would like to thank Dr Anna Conway and all the staff at the Breast Cancer Clinic at North Devon District Hospital for their care, kindness and incredible efficiency. They are fantastic and a true tribute to the NHS.”
Carol was immediately inundated with support, with one fan writing under her post: “Carol you’ve been my inspiration for years. Thank you for sharing. Take care and recover quickly. Weird that this video comes up the morning you’re due to see your GP about a lump in your breast. Hope you enjoy gardening too.”
“Praying for a speedy recovery Carole. Hope you’re resting. Lots of love to you and your family, Chris,” wrote another, while another added: “Carole I’ve admired you for years. Your skill at imparting your horticultural knowledge and absolute passion for plants shines through from you. I have no doubt you will be an inspiration to those unfortunate enough to walk the same path as you. Thank you for being you. Wishing you all the best in your recovery.”
