“To think that 50 years from now, not only will his book be remade, but it will be remade so beautifully. He would have been very, very proud,” said Clavell’s daughter, Michaela Clavell.
The 10-episode limited series follows Yoshii as he fights for his life against the Regency Council tasked with impeaching and killing Lord Toranaga.
“Many of the characters belong to the samurai class, so this show is a deep dive into the different types of people in that class,” said Eriko Miyagawa, the show’s producer.
This series explores the roots of various Japanese cultural traditions, from the intricate tea ceremony to archery, a form of archery that has been passed down through the centuries.
“It means the world to see the culture I grew up in represented with such respect, care and authenticity, and I think it will make Japanese audiences feel seen and represented. So I’m excited,” Miyagawa said.
“As a producer, I hired Japanese staff, gesture masters, and period drama production specialists to properly introduce our culture to the world,” added producer and star Hiroyuki Sanada.
