Freya Colbert won gold in the 400m individual medley on the final day of competition in Doha, capping Britain’s run at the world championships.
The 19-year-old’s first career individual international win came after Max Lichfield added to Britain’s medal tally by winning silver in the men’s category at the same event.
Colbert’s podium-top performance was Great Britain’s seventh medal in the pool program and 18th overall, an encouraging achievement as athletes focus on this summer’s Paris Olympics.
“It’s amazing, but I’m still a little in disbelief. I knew I could do it,” said Colbert, who overtook Anastasia Golbenko of Israel with 10 meters left in the final freestyle leg to take the title. That was probably one.” This is her first race at this level where she has absolute confidence in herself and her race plan.
“I believed in the plan and stayed true to what I knew were my strengths instead of chasing girls, and it really paid off in the end. Very satisfying. doing.”
Litchfield was thrilled to win the first World Championships medal of his career, although he was forced into a close race with eventual gold medalist Lewis Clairvert of New Zealand.
The 28-year-old from Sheffield said: “I’ve come so close to a medal so many times and I’m really happy to have broken it. It’s February and some of the guys haven’t been here but it was still a great swim. ” he said. She is really happy with the way her race went. I’m really happy and looking forward to the rest of the year. ”
Another British athlete, Anna Hopkin, won bronze as part of the mixed 4x100m relay team earlier this week, finishing sixth in the women’s 50m freestyle final.
