An enthusiastic man training for the London Marathon was stopped by police as he ran with a refrigerator on his back. Because he seemed to have damaged the refrigerator.
Daniel Fairbrother, 34, was jogging with a 25.7kg refrigerator strapped to his back when he was spotted by a passing police patrol car.
Traffic police flashed their blue lights and stopped him on the Stevenage road in Herts.
Daniel, from Stevenage, said one of the officers asked him what he was doing with his fridge, which he named Talulah.
The timber salesman told officers he was running the London Marathon on behalf of Diabetes UK and that it was part of his training.
He hopes to break the world record for running a marathon while holding home appliances.
The current record is 4 hours and 52 minutes held by Sam Hammond, a corporal in the Royal Marines.
Daniel said: “I was running with my flashlight on. It was a quiet night and it was pitch black except for cars passing by. Then the police car did a double take.
“The road flashed blue, so I looked to my left and sure enough, there was a police car.
“As I tried to cross into the middle of the road by the driver’s window, the officer said, ‘We have to stop you because we need to figure out what the hell is going on.’
“They definitely got suspicious when I stopped in the middle of the road with my blue lights on.
“When I told him about my marathon training, he asked me where I got the refrigerator and why I was carrying it around like that.”
When he explained why he was running with a refrigerator on his back, police say he joked, “Did you know you can order from Curry’s and they’ll deliver it to you?”
Danielle is hoping to raise £10,000 for Diabetes UK to support her best friend Sam, who has type 1 diabetes and has been with her through “high and low times”.
He secured a spot in the Diabetes UK marathon and set his sights on a fridge he named Talulah, after the bobsled in the movie Cool Runnings.
He said: “This was one of my favorite movies as a kid, and they cut through the end of the line on a bobsled. I just hope I don’t have a big accident like they did.”
A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Police said: “We would like to wish Daniel all the best in his marathon training.”
The London Marathon takes place on Sunday, April 21st, but he was stopped on January 7th.
