Local theater stalwart Adrian Buckle will direct MADC’s new dark comedy thriller linae beauty queen It’s a dream that has finally become a reality.
“When Marille Coppini, then artistic director of MADC, gave me the chance to direct this production, I didn’t have to say it twice. In fact, I couldn’t believe my luck.” he began.
“Very similar pillow man – Another play by Martin McDonagh, this was my second Unifaun – but this one is more interesting. I love Black’s humor so I hope this adds another feather to her MADC illustrious cap. ”

This light-hearted play is funny with the darkness characteristic of Irish humour, but local audiences may recognize similarities to life in Malta. “Ireland is an island like Malta, so the island mentality is well known,” Buckle continues. “We both value family, and that’s what this play is all about.”
The story is about Maureen, a plain and lonely unmarried woman who lives with her demanding mother, Mag, in the small Irish village of Rhinen. Her mug’s manipulations threaten to ruin her daughter’s first, and perhaps last, chance at love, resulting in thrilling moments of farce and melodrama as two desperate and isolated women collide. be painted.
“There are two things I love about this play,” says Buckle. “First is the darkness. The protagonists are trapped in this dance of death, abusing each other at will, and Mag uses her daughter Maureen to push her to the edge of sanity. There’s humor and comic relief as well.”
We inspire, inspire and help each other– Adrian Buckle
A heavyweight character like this requires an experienced and talented performer. And here, the MADC cast doesn’t disappoint. Buckle highlights that acclaimed actors Isabel Warrington, Andrea Pace, Nicholas Jackman and Alex Wienink play the four roles with panache.
“This play has a great cast. We are lucky that the wonderful Andrea Pace, who plays Maureen, chose this production to mark her return to theater. I have worked closely with Isabel Warrington (Mag) for many years. We were really looking forward to working together. I enjoy working with Nicholas Jackman, who patiently guides everyone through his Irish accent. And Alex Wieninck plays Ray Dooley beautifully, emphasizing his naivety and innocence in the face of the scheming women.”
Meanwhile, the rehearsal process brought both funny and chilling moments. “We feed each other ideas, inspire each other, and help each other,” he continues.
“But during rehearsals, one particular scene (I’ll leave it to the audience to guess which one!) brought a chill to the room, and that was exactly the moment I said to myself, “This is it!” That’s why I do theater!”
