An emotional Ewen Ferguson won the DP World Tour’s BMW International Open in Germany to qualify for the British Open.
The Scotsman won by two strokes in Munich and is one of the top five players out of the top 20 in the Race to Dubai, along with Jesper Svensson, Rory Kanter, Nacho Elvira and Matteo Manassero, who have all qualified for the 152nd Open, which will be held in Troon from 18-21 July.
The 28-year-old Ferguson shot a 4-under 68 on Sunday to finish at 18 under par, ahead of Jordan Smith of Great Britain, who shared the lead with Ferguson after three rounds, and David Micheluzzi of Australia, who was tied for second at 16 under par.
Ferguson said after the second round that he was happy to be playing again after recently struggling with dizziness. Sky Sports “I honestly can’t believe it,” she said in a tearful interview.
“The last four holes I felt like I was in a dream. I really didn’t think it was happening. It was crazy. I was hitting some really good shots and they were going a lot further than usual.”
“I wanted to do it for my dad, my mom, my sister and my brother. I love them so much and every shot I took was with them in mind.”
“It’s a really difficult game. I’ve been feeling unwell for the last two months and I’ve been moaning like crazy.” [This win] It’s a weight off my shoulders. I’m so happy.
“The British Open is the tournament everyone wants to play in and I feel I can do well there, and probably the same with the Scottish Open next week. It’s a very exciting time for me.”
Ferguson wants to train at Fleetwood before the Open
Ferguson was due to play in the final British Open qualifying round on Tuesday but said afterwards he felt he was playing well enough to secure a place at either the Munich tournament or the Genesis Scottish Open.
He added: “I didn’t want to wear myself out. I thought maybe I could win this week and maybe I could get a top 10 finish in Scotland and get my spot so I decided to pull out of the open qualifier.”

“Obviously it was a really good decision because it gave me a lift and got me here with the trophy. I actually got a text from Tommy Fleetwood saying well done so I said let’s do a practice round.” [at the Open] So I’m looking forward to it.”
The win was Ferguson’s third on the DP World Tour and his first since the ISPS Handa World Invitational in August 2022, and comes five months after his first victory at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters that same year.
Micheluzzi finished with birdie, birdie and eagle to tie for second place with Smith, whose hopes of winning were effectively ended when his tee shot on the 16th hole fell into the water while aiming for the green.
Connor Syme of Scotland and Matthew Southgate of England finished tied for fourth at 14 under thanks to Southgate’s eagle on the sixth hole.
