On Friday, a top Tory MP claimed that Islamists had “taken control” of Sadiq Khan and London, sparking a fierce backlash from Labor.
Former Tory deputy leader Lee Anderson claimed the capital had been “hijacked” following a wave of weekly pro-Palestinian protests against the Gaza war.
Mr Anderson was responding to a Telegraph article in which former home secretary Suela Braverman wrote that “Islamists, extremists and anti-Semites are leading this country”.
Her comments came after the Speaker of the House of Commons allowed a vote on Labor’s amendment, sparking outrage over the Gaza cease-fire resolution and leading to accusations that she was caving in to extremists.
It later emerged that pro-Palestinian demonstrators were attempting to forcibly block parliament. The Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) wanted people to enter parliament to lobby MPs to vote in favor of a ceasefire, but they
I was stopped by a security guard.
“We want so many of you to come that we have to lock the doors of Parliament itself,” PSC leader Ben Jamal told the crowd, The Times reported.
In an interview with GB News, Mr Anderson said: “I don’t actually believe that the Islamists control our country, but what I do believe is that they control Khan and they control London.”
“He has actually handed over our capital to his cronies… If you let Labor in through the back door, expect more of this, our city to be taken over by these lunatics. ”
Shadow Health Secretary Wes Streeting said: “It’s divisive and dangerous. The Conservatives have gone beyond the dog-whistle strategy of the last mayoral election and into blatant racism and Islamophobia. Get your act together.”
Shadow Minister for Democracy Florence Eshalomi added: “I hope Conservative campaign headquarters will consider this matter as soon as possible.”
A London Labor Party official said: “This kind of vile Islamophobia is exactly how the Conservative Party campaigned against Sadiq Khan in 2016. I wonder if they won’t tolerate it again this time?” Ta.
The Home Secretary rejected Mrs Braverman’s claims that Islamists were in charge of Britain.
