Conor McGregor could be in line for a title fight in a new weight class in the UFC.
The promotion has been considering adding a 165-pound division for some time, and McGregor is seen as an ideal candidate for the inaugural world title. Currently, the transition from lightweight to welterweight requires a fighter to gain a significant 15 pounds, which is more than the usual 10-pound difference between the classes.
Ahead of his return fight against Michael Chandler, McGregor could be in line for his first-ever title shot in his new weight class.

“Someone said the UFC wants McGregor vs. Chandler in a 165-pound world title fight, so they’re going to add 165 pounds and move 170 pounds to 175 pounds, but if they do that. It has to be Conor, and if you’re going to do 165 pounds, it has to be Conor.”
Former two-time UFC champion Daniel Cormier said on his YouTube channel, “Introducing a new weight class has to mean something. You can’t have two normal fighters introduce that weight class.” He spoke on his YouTube channel.
UFC boss Dana White has made his thoughts on the 2018 165-pound division clear, saying, “It makes no sense at all and I never thought about it.
“If you get to 165 pounds, you’re going to start pulling people from the 170-pound division. You see 170-pound and 155-pound people who didn’t win a title jump up to 165 pounds to try to compete for a title there. It will be.” ”
White believes adding more weight classes in the UFC will reduce the quality of champions and confuse fans. Women’s featherweight was the last weight class added to the UFC, but it has been gone since Amanda Nunes retired last year.
Cormier continued, “Look, when we did the women’s thing, 145 pounds didn’t work out for us. We ended up with two, but remember, Germaine de Randamie won the championship in Brooklyn. However, Germaine de Randamie won the fight and refused to fight Cris Cyborg. ”
“No one took it seriously until Cris Cyborg became champion, but when Cyborg became champion, it didn’t matter. The only reason it worked was because it was Cris Cyborg. Yes, it would be the same thing if we were to add a nameless man to this belt. ”
